Born beyond Oz

Fanfiction

After the fall of Oz, Elphaba and Fiyero find themselves far from the world they once knew. No crowns, no armies, no whispers of who they are meant to be, only each other and the endless stretch of unknown land. But Oz is still curious.

In the quiet...

Kyrian learned to crawl by chasing sunlight. Elphaba sat on the ground near by sorting herbs into small bundles, when she felt a soft pull in the air, magic shifting, curious and playful. She looked up just in time to see Kyrian wiggle forward on his belly, arms pushing hard while his legs forgot what they were supposed to do.
+

Elphaba: Oh. (She breathed) Umm Fiyero?!
+

Fiyero: (looking over from where he sat nearby) Baby? What is it?
+
Kyrian moved again. Not far but just enough to bump into Elphaba's foot. Then he froze, his eyes widened like he wasn't sure how he'd gotten there.
+
Elphaba: You crawled (she said smiling)
+
Kyrian blinked and laughed, a bright and happy sound and tried again. This time he made it a bit further before flopping down with a dramatic sigh.
+

Fiyero: (laughing) Well done.
+
Kyrian beamed like he'd just conquered the world. From that day on, crawling became Kyrian's favorite thing. He chased sunspots on the ground, crawled toward sounds, toward Elphaba's voice and Fiyero's presence. Sometimes he crawled just to crawl, laughing the whole way.

One afternoon, Elphaba noticed his magic. Kyrian sat in the grass, patting the ground with both hands. Every time his palms touched the earth, tiny green sparks flickered, soft and harmless, like glowing dust. Elphaba walked over and knelt beside him.
+
Elphaba: That's magic. (She said gently) It listens to you.
+
Kyrian looked down at his hands, fascinated.
+
Fiyero: Just like mommy.
+
Elphaba: Like me. (She said nodding)
+
Kyrian squealed happily, slapping the ground. The green sparks danced over him.
+
Fiyero: Well. I suppose the world didn't stand a chance. (He said smiling)
+
Walking took much longer and was much more serious. Kyrian stood between them, gripping Elphaba's finger with one hand and Fiyero's with the other. His legs shook as if they were unsure about the whole idea.
+
Elphaba: You don't have to, only if you want. (She told him softly)
+
Kyrian looked at her and then Fiyero before letting go. He took one tiny step and then another. He wobbled, arms out wide and fell right on his bottom. There was a moment silence before Kyrian let out a laugh, a big proud smile.
+
Fiyero: That. Was perfect.
+
Elphaba: You did it. (She said picking him up and kissing his cheeks)
+
As Kyrian grew steadier, Elphaba began teaching him how to be gentle with his magic. She showed him how to breathe and how to be calm with his magic even when he got excited.
+
Elphaba: Magic feels your feelings (she told him) So be kind to yourself, no need to rush.
+
Kyrian listened in his own way, sometimes carefully and sometimes with mischief. Fiyero taught him different lessons. He taught him how to wait, listen before speaking and how to notice when someone felt left out, even if that someone was small or quiet.
+
Fiyero: Being strong isn't about being loud. (He said one evening) It's about being fair.
+
At night Kyrian slept between them. Elphaba rested her head on Fiyero's shoulder, tracing the stitching on his sleeves.
+
Elphaba: He's like us. (She said quietly)
+
Fiyero: (turning toward her) He's better. He gets to grow up loved.
+
She smiled and kissed him, slow and warm.
+
Elphaba: We're good parents.
+
Fiyero: Yes. Yes we are.
+
Between them Kyrian sighed deep in his sleep. Magic glowing softly around his fingers and softened.
+
Elphaba: (watching his magic glow fade) He already knows how to be gentle.
+
Fiyero: That's because he learned it from you.
+
Elphaba: (shaking her head slightly) From us.
+
Fiyero brushed his forehead against hers.
+
Fiyero: I never thought this would be my life. (He admitted) But I wouldn't trade it for anything.
+
Elphaba: Neither would I.
+
She fit closer against him, and he wrapped his arm around both her and Kyrian, holding them like that was exactly what he was made for. No rush. No fear. Just warmth and quiet. Outside, the forest rested. Inside the small circle they made together, everything felt complete. Between them, Kyrian slept on, breathing softly— small steps, bright magic, and a life learning, day by day, how to be gentle and loved.
