Born beyond Oz
After the fall of Oz, Elphaba and Fiyero find themselves far from the world they once knew. No crowns, no armies, no whispers of who they are meant to be, only each other and the endless stretch of unknown land. But Oz is still curious. In the quiet...
A few days later, Elphaba wakes up to Fiyero not in bed. She quickly hops out of bed and runs into their sitting area. Fiyero is still nowhere to be found. She looks over to see a pile of wood, all different sizes stacked against the wall.
Fiyero:(Walking through the door) Morning beautiful, sleep well?
Elphaba: Fiyero? What are you doing?
Fiyero: (laying down more wood) I'm going to build a crib.
Elphaba: A crib? Fiyero have you ever even built one?
Fiyero: No, but it can't be that hard. I'm a father now, I need to make sure my son has a nice crib for when he arrives.
Elphaba: Fiyero, that's so sweet of you. But you might need my help.
Fiyero: Fae, I just want you to sit back and relax. Breakfast is on the stove. And I'll put together this crib.
Elphaba: (fighting the urge to wanna help) Fine, but don't say I didn't offer to help.
Elphaba goes and sits down. Fiyero prepared a nice breakfast, while Fiyero starts on the crib. Elphaba watched closely. He picks up the wood one by one and cuts them all different lengths and pieces them together.
Fiyero: (down on his knees, with a half-built crib) So?
Elphaba: (still trying to not take control) Yero, I think you still need to build onto it.
Fiyero: (looking at the crib) You're right, it is missing a few pieces.
Elphaba laughs, she loves how committed Fiyero is to building this crib and embracing the father role already. Fiyero nails a few more pieces together.
Fiyero: What about now?
Elphaba: (she walks over closer to where he's at) Fiyero, baby. I love it.
Fiyero: (smiling at her and putting on the final touches) Thank you. I know it's not perfect, a little crooked but it's stable.
Elphaba: (Interrupting him) It is perfect. Perfectly made with love.
Fiyero stands up and carries the crib inside and places it beside their bed. It's a tight squeeze but fits perfectly. He sits on the bed admiring his work and Elphaba sits beside him and lays her head on his shoulder.
Elphaba: It feels strange. You know, preparing for someone. We haven't even met yet.
Fiyero: But you did meet him. Well kind of, in your dream the other night.
Elphaba: Sort of, just it will be different when he's here. Not just him in my dream.
They sit there for a while just admiring the empty crooked crib that would soon be filled with the Joy of Life.
Elphaba: Thank you (she says quietly and placing a kiss on Fiyero's shoulder)
Fiyero: For the crib?
Elphaba: (she laughs) No, for being with me even when I don't let myself ask.
Fiyero: (Interlocking his finger with hers) Always.
Fiyero: (rubbing his thumb along her cheek) Listen, we won't be perfect.
Elphaba: No. (She agrees)
Fiyero: We'll be scared.
Elphaba: Yes.
Fiyero: But we'll be here. Every cry, every night and every moment.
Elphaba nods and tears begin falling down her face.
Fiyero: We don't gotta be perfect, we just gotta be present.
Elphaba: I never imagined a life that felt so real.
Fiyero: That's how you know this life matters.
Elphaba: You know, your crib is still a little crooked. (She says laughing trying to make the room feel lighter)
Fiyero: Good! (He says smiling) So are we and that's what makes us... Us. We're not perfect but we're perfect together.
Elphaba: (Lacing her fingers together with his) This is our beginning.
Fiyero: (kissing her hand) Not the start... The continuation.
Fiyero kisses her, the moonlight from the cracks of the wood shines in on them. The inside wasn't perfect but everything was ready. They were ready for this new chapter in their story.
