Born beyond Oz
Fanfiction
After the fall of Oz, Elphaba and Fiyero find themselves far from the world they once knew. No crowns, no armies, no whispers of who they are meant to be, only each other and the endless stretch of unknown land. But Oz is still curious.
In the quiet...
Scene 1
Fiyero and Elphaba have been living in their new world for a few months now. Fiyero has discovered that there is a place that sells things that they may need, like food, water, and other supplies.
Elphaba: (with worry in her voice) Please don't be long.
Fiyero: (Reassuring her) I promise, I won't be.
He walks over and gives her a kiss. This is the first time that one of them has ever left their new place. Scared of what's out there or even worse whose out there. Fiyero grabs his bag and quickly heads out.
Elphaba: (standing by the door way) Fiyero?
Fiyero: (stopping and turning back towards her) Yes my love.
Elphaba: (with worry in her voice) Please... please just be careful.
Fiyero: (trying to reassure her) My love, I will. I promise to be back quickly.
Fiyero throws her a smile before heading out into the unknown.
Elphaba's heart sank down to her stomach. She was worried sick about Fiyero being out there on his own. In order to keep her mind busy, she decides to try magic again. Her magic has always come easy to her but after all this time, it felt like reaching for something behind her fingertips. A language she knew by heart but couldn't quite speak out loud again. She closes her eyes, lifts her hands.
Elphaba: You got this, you've done this before.
She opens her eyes, a green light flickers over the fire.
Elphaba: Ugh, this is useless. Maybe my magic is gone for good.
She frowns before trying again. Taking in a deep breath, she holds her hand toward the fire again. She thought about the forest outside, she laughter of Fiyero, and the quiet promise they made together. The green light appears again in the fire, this time brighter.
Elphaba: (looking at the fire) It worked.
The fire grew, she moved closer and hovered her hands over the fire. The flames of the fire form two figures side by side with a faint green light glowing in one of the figures. Elphaba studies the figures before the fire dies out.
Elphaba: (looking at the now empty fire) What does this mean?... Does it mean what I think it does?
Without thinking her hand slowly moves to her stomach, she feels an energy that she's never felt before. She finally understood what she was seeing in the fire. Tears begin to fall down her face, tears of joy but also of fear. Fear of what could happen bringing a new life into the already dark world.
Elphaba: All this time? This new life is growing inside of me.
She sits there. When she hears the sound of footsteps near by. She stays quiet, not sure of what could be lurking outside. The door opens.
Fiyero: (coming through the door) Fae?
Elphaba breathes normally again as she knows it's just Fiyero.
Elphaba: Yero, you scared me for a moment.
Fiyero: (setting down the supplies he bought) I'm sorry love. I didn't mean to frighten you. I didn't get much but I got us enough to get by.
He turns around to see her sitting on the floor.
Fiyero: (walking over to her) Is everything alright?
Scene 2
Elphaba tries to avoid eye contact with him but can't. As soon as her eyes meet his she breaks down.
Fiyero: (holding her tight) Baby, what's wrong?
Elphaba wasn't sure exactly how to explain to him what's wrong. But she knew he wouldn't judge and would listen.
Elphaba: While you were away, I decided to try my magic again.
Fiyero: and?
Elphaba: Well, at first my magic wasn't as strong as it use to be. So I tried again this time thinking of you, us and our new life. When I did the fire grew and showed me two figures but one had a small faint green light, glowing inside them.
Fiyero wasn't sure what to say, as he still wasn't sure of what was happening.
Fiyero: What does that mean?
Elphaba: (laughing knowing he was trying to understand but not being able to) Fiyero, I think I'm pregnant.
Fiyero looks at her with a smile forming on his face.
Fiyero: (kissing her cheek) Really!? Elphaba, this is good news. I've always wanted to be a father.
Elphaba kisses him and smiles.
Fiyero: Are you worried?
Elphaba: Very, I'm worried about a lot of things. What if the baby is green, what if it's not a good idea to bring a baby into this cruel world, what if I'm not a good mother, or even worse what if someone finds us. I couldn't bare the thought of something happening to one of us or the baby.
Fiyero takes a deep breath, for he didn't think about the possibility of any of that.
Fiyero: (comforting her) Fae, listen. No matter what, I know one thing. We're in this together, we will figure it out. You will be an amazing mother and this child will be loved no matter what. I promise to protect you and our little one.
Elphaba: (smiling at him) I love you.
Fiyero: I love you too. (He places his hand on her stomach) and I love you too little one.
Elphaba's hand sits on top of his. Fiyero helps her up off the floor.
Elphaba: Did anyone see you while you were out?
Fiyero: No one besides the guy working at the store. I grabbed a few things but I didn't want to stay there too long, I was afraid of being spotted.
Elphaba: Fiyero? What happens if someone finds us? What happens to the baby?
Fiyero: If someone does find us, you take the baby and run. Run as far as you can, I'm only worried about your safety.
Elphaba: But I'm worried about yours too.
Elphaba feels not a hard kick but a little flutter in her stomach she grabs her stomach.
Fiyero: (worried) Are you okay?
Elphaba: I'm fine, it's just this little one is already moving. Here feel.
Fiyero moves closer and places his head on her stomach. When he feels a slight bump.
Fiyero: I feel you little one, I promise to protect you always. Let's get some rest, we've had a busy day.
Fiyero takes her hand and guides her to the bed. They lay side by side with Fiyero laying his hand on her as a shield of protection. As the night winds howl through the small cracks of the wood. Elphaba falls into a deep sleep.
Elphaba's dream
Outside, Elphaba looks out into the horizon. She holds a small bundle of cloth in her arms, she looks down but couldn't see a face. The winds whisper "not yet". She looks down at the cloth that begins growing green, a sign of a promise not of power. She looks toward the horizon to see a figure coming out of the bright light. "Fiyero?" Elphaba says. "I found you" he says coming closer. "You always do" she smiles. She hears a small laugh from out in the distance. The sky flickers and a small figure appears on the edge of the open field. Surrounded by a green aura, the figure smiles like he already knew her. "Kyrian" Elphaba whispers. The name slipped out, Thunder rolled in the distance, the clouds began to grow dark. "Not yet" Fiyero says stepping toward her, echoing the wind. "They're not ready yet" he says. The child faded away, the clouds opened up and the sky became clear.
Elphaba jumps up out of her sleep, her hands go straight to her stomach. Fiyero jumps up.
Fiyero: Elphaba? What's wrong?
Elphaba: (trying to process the dream she had) I had a dream.
Fiyero: sitting up beside her with his hand never leaving her) A bad one?
Elphaba: No, just a strong one. You were there, with me.
Fiyero: (with a smile forming) I'd hope so.
Elphaba still wasn't sure of what the dream meant but she knew that it meant something. She was expecting a son, a son who would be powerful.
Elphaba: I saw him. Older, just for a moment.
Fiyero: Saw who?
Elphaba: Our son.
Fiyero: You saw our child?
Elphaba: Well an older version of him, he looked strong, sure of himself and magic wrapped around him. He had no fear he looked powerful.
Fiyero: A son? Magic? Elphaba, this dream wasn't just one of your visions. This dream was telling you about our son. He could be the answer to all the problems with this world, he could be the one who can help save this world, or what's left of it.
Elphaba: No, my son will not be put into whatever this world is going to be. No one can know who he is. If Galinda or anyone discovers who he is or whose he is, this could lead to them finding out we're not dead.
Fiyero: I know, we would never put our child in harms way. But Elphaba, he could be the answer to everything. If he has your powers, this changes everything.
Elphaba: No, I will make sure his power isn't like mine. I want him to channel his own power into something better than mine. But the dream showed more.
Fiyero: Oh yeah?
Elphaba: He looked at me like he already knew me. Like he'd always know us. Kyrian was the name that came in my dream.
Fiyero: Kyrian (he says practicing the name) Kyrian, I like that.
Elphaba: Me too, I don't know how I know it but it fits. It made this dream feel more like a promise than anything. The name feels powerful but also familiar.
Fiyero: And we will protect that promise. Our son Kyrian will be exactly what this world needs and what we need. A promise of a better future.
Elphaba: I just hope we can protect him long before the rest of the world finds out about him.
Fiyero: We will protect him as long as we can.
Elphaba: We better start preparing, he will be here soon. But first let's get some rest.
Fiyero: Please wake me if you have another dream.
Elphaba: I will. But I want you to get some rest.
Fiyero: and I don't want you to go through this alone. I'm always here for you and now our son too.
He kisses her before they both lay back down and fall asleep.
