Born beyond Oz

Fanfiction

After the fall of Oz, Elphaba and Fiyero find themselves far from the world they once knew. No crowns, no armies, no whispers of who they are meant to be, only each other and the endless stretch of unknown land. But Oz is still curious. In the quiet between forests and mountains, they begin a life forged in secrecy. They build something small and hidden, convincing themselves that distance can mean safety. But even here, danger lingers at the edges. The world they left behind still remains a place of uncertainty and perhaps in ways they do not yet see.

Days pass, The Forrest is quiet....To quiet. Elphaba could feel a change in the world around them. Her hands tremble as she presses on her stomach. The baby was more restless than usual. His tiny fists pounded her insides. The child was ready.

Elphaba: (holding her stomach) Fiyero!

Fiyero rushes over, his eyes usually calm were now sharper. He moved on her side, his straw hands steadying her as she swayed.

Fiyero: Elphaba.... Your about to...

Elphaba: Yes (she whispers and gripping his arm) I can feel him, he's coming.... I can't wait.

There was danger lurking outside, but neither of them spoke about it. There but there were signs everywhere, snapping branches, faint unfamiliar scents. Whatever was out there was closer than it ever come before.

Fiyero: (wrapping his arms around her waist) We gotta do this here.

Elphaba is pushed to the floor by another strong kick. Fiyero helps lower her to the floor, his eyes scanning the outside through the cloth covered windows and listening for any unfamiliar sounds.

Fiyero: We can't leave, not with something out there.

Elphaba: (tired, out of breath) I'm not running. Not with the baby ready.

Every outside sound felt like a countdown. Fiyero layers blankets and pillows as best he could.

Fiyero: (his voice soft, trying to help calm her) Breathe in.... And out....in....out

Elphaba clutched his hands as the contractions worsened. The baby's movements mirrored the outside danger, tiny but urgent, sensing the world before they were in it.

Elphaba: They're closer. I can feel them (she whispered between breaths)

Fiyero: (stroking her hair from out of her face) Then, we'll fight them together. I've got you always.

The Forrest seemed to pause in response, holding its breath with them. Every outside sound felt like a countdown. Hours turned into minutes. Time had lost all meaning. Each contraction, sharper than the last. Fiyero pressed cold cloths on her forehead, adjusted pillows and blankets beneath her and whispers encouraging words, soft enough for the baby to hear.

Elphaba: (squeezing his hands) I'm scared. (Her voice trembled) So scared.

Fiyero: You don't have to be, not with me here. (He whispered) We're ready together.

A sudden crack of a branch outside made it start. Elphaba pushed hard as if the baby's presence alone could block the world from reaching them. Finally a new cry broke through, the baby had arrived. Fiyero laid the newborn on Elphaba's chest, tears following down their face as they admired their new baby.

Fiyero: Your amazing. (He says kissing her forehead)

Elphaba: We did it. (She says breathless)

Fiyero: You did it.

Her arms wrapping around the tiny body. Relief and fear wrapped together in a knot. Her hands move along the small body.

Elphaba: (her heart stopped, she looks at Fiyero with panic) He's... Green.

Fiyero: (holding onto her and the baby, his eyes searching her face) He's perfect.

Elphaba's mind spun. She had imagined many things. fear, love, danger but not this. Not the child, her child, born green like her own skin, tiny and alive in her arms. Outside the Forrest whispered and the wind carried a scent that was closing in. The world was closer than they had ever imagined. Inside Elphaba held her child, fear and the wonder of what was to come. The baby's tiny fists pressed against her chest. For the first time, she understood that the baby inherited everything she feared and everything she loved.

Fiyero: He's perfect. Kyrian, we love you so much already.

Elphaba: He's got your eyes, you know.

They sit and admire their beautiful baby boy. When the winds outside begin to shift. A tree branch outside nearby snaps.

Fiyero: They're here. (He says in a low voice) We need to move...Now!

Before she could even respond another sound reached them, footsteps heavily searching. The baby's small cries echoed through the room as though he sensed the danger.

Elphaba: (holding the baby tight, panicking) Fiyero? What do we do? They'll take us.

Fiyero: We run. Together. I will protect you both. Trust me.

The door rattled. A sound that was not of the wind, something trying to force their way in.

Fiyero: (grabbing her arm) Hold onto me, No one touches us.

The door rattled again, footsteps closer. Threats carried in the wind. Elphaba's heart races, the babies cries getting louder.

Fiyero: (whispering) We leave now, or we lose everything.

Elphaba nodded and held tightly to Kyrian.

Together they stepped into the shadows of the Forrest. The Forrest no longer a safe place but now a place of danger. Nowhere to go they just run. When they get far enough away from the house, they stop to rest.

Fiyero: We're far enough now, they won't reach us.

Elphaba: Where will we stay for the night?

Fiyero: Just up ahead seems to be a small cave. That should do till sunrise.

They walk to the near cutout of the rock. Fiyero gathers some sticks and a piece of cloth from his pocket and makes a small bed. Elphaba lays Kyrian down. She leans up against Fiyero.

Elphaba: Is it me they're looking for? Or is it the baby?

Fiyero: What do you mean?

Elphaba: Can the people of Oz sense there is new life, a new magical life? Does his presence send some sort of signal that he's here?

Fiyero: I don't know. (He wasn't sure exactly what to say)

Elphaba: His presence alone makes the outside world curious. I can feel it.

Fiyero: We just have to stay ahead, we hide and protect. That's all we can do.

The outside world settled around them, now safe. They both breathe, sitting admiring the new life they brought in the world. Elphaba sings him a lullaby to help settle him to sleep.

Kyrian, my bright little star,
Sleep now, though the night is far.
The leaves will whisper, the waters will gleam,
And carry you gently into a dream.
Mountains will guard you, rivers will sing,
Winds will cradle you under their wing.
The moon bends low, soft and serene,
To watch over you, my shadow green.
Tiny hands of magic and light,
Hold you safe through the long, quiet night.
Close your eyes, let your heart take flight,
Dream, my love, until morning's bright.

Fiyero: That was beautiful, look he's sleeping peacefully now.

Elphaba: He's sleeping like the world is in the palm of his hands.

Fiyero: After all this running it sure seems like it is. (He says kissing her shoulder)

Elphaba: Do you think he knows how much we'll protect him?

Fiyero: He doesn't need to know, we do. We get to watch him grow and protect him from everything out there.

Elphaba: (pressing her head closer to Fiyero's chest.) I hope... I hope I'm enough for him. I hope I can be their world... as much as you are mine.

Fiyero: (tightened his arms around her, voice low and certain). You already are. You always will be.

Outside the forest, shadows still lingered, curiosity waiting, patient and silent. But for now... for this night... they were safe. They sat huddled together, watching the child sleep, hearts full of awe and fear, knowing the world would notice eventually but for now, it was just theirs.
