First Taste
The hot french baker she hated now knows her secret.
The first day of a new semester always smelled the same.
Butter, coffee, moisty.
Students sprinted across the courtyard carrying piping bags in hand. Someone dropped an entire tray of croissants before nine in the morning. A second-year was already crying over laminated dough.
Campus sweet campus.
"Jemma!"
Before she could react, Lara crashed into her with the force of an affectionate golden retriever.
"You came back bitch!"
"I was legally required to."
"how, did something happened?" lara looked worried.
"I paid tuition."
"die." lara snorts.
Stacy arrived several seconds later, carrying two coffees and looking as emotionally expressive as a ghost.
"Morning."
"You're alive," Jemma said.
"I've been told."
The three of them walked toward the pastry building together.
For a while, nobody said much.
Then Jemma blurted, "...I think the competition was my fault."
Both girls stopped.
Key Chain Girl frowned. "What?"
Jemma stared at the pavement.
"June was on the judging panel."
Stacy's footsteps slowed. "...June?"
"I didn't know until afterwards."
"oh."
"I keep thinking... maybe if I wasn't involved, we'd have at least made the shortlist."
Lara groaned dramatically before pulling Jemma's hair strand.
"Ow."
"Trying to take whole blame is so dramatic in 21st century, learn to frame people into trouble."
Jemma folded her arms.
"If Chef Laurent himself told me your dessert sucked, I'd believe him." continues Lara. "But if you're telling me some ex-boyfriend political nonsense happened?"
While Jemma and Lara were talking about it and laughing Stacy was alone standing in silence.
Stacy silently unlocked her phone. "you should have said about this june thing long ago Jemma also-" She turned the screen toward Key Chain Girl.
The J Pastry Scholarship.
International. Fully funded. Open to students who had experienced financial hardship.
Key Chain Girl's eyes widened. "...No way."
"apply for this one" Stacy looked at her over the rim of her coffee. This one was specially opened for you, and kids like you from this year, I had to go through trouble for this.
For a moment, Lara got whimpy but she decides to save the tears for later "on it with my fingers crossed."
Jemma, who hugs Stacy, "why are you getting happy" Stacy asks.
"You don't know how much relief it brings me to see one of my friends solving issues of another friend."
The three spend a moment together and heads back to their destined class.
