## Chapter Five
---

Three and a half weeks had passed, and Eli’s brother was coming home later this week. Eli had told me about how they got along fairly well for siblings, but everything was always a competition.

Eli’s grandma was pleased that we were ‘engaged’. She never shut up about it, ever.

Eli and I were in the living room, watching TV. My head was in his lap, and he was playing with my hair absent-mindedly, which was surprisingly soothing. His grandmother and parents walked in, joining us, and I sat up. Obviously something was up, and I needed to pay attention.

“I’m going to be ninety-five in February, and who knows really how long I have left? I really want to see my grandson get married,” his grandma started.

“So we were thinking, why not move the wedding up to January, while you guys are still at home? We’d be honored to cover all expenses, and then you could have your family fly down here and stay for the wedding,” his mother finished hopefully. Oh dear, what have we gotten into?

“Actually--,” Eli started, and I knew he was going to come clean.

“We’d love to,” I forced a smile, and they all smiled in response.

“Fantastic! You’re going to have the best wedding ever!” his mother hugged me, and I smiled. I let out a small yawn, then realized how late it was.

“You guys head on to bed. Now, don’t you wear out my future granddaughter!” his grandma warned, and we went upstairs. Eli shut the door behind us, and I could feel his anger.

“Why did you say that?” he asked through his teeth.

“Eli,” I said softly, “We’ll just get a divorce when it’s all over. It’s really hard to say no to them, Eli. Your family is amazing, they care so much.”

“You’re sure you’re willing to commit to that? We’ll have to be married for a while or it will seem fishy,” he said.

“Yeah, it’s not like you have to stay committed, you can still date other people and stuff,” I shrugged. I went in the bathroom and changed into some PJs, deciding I would take a shower in the morning. I laid down in the huge bed, and felt the bed dip down beside me as Eli laid down.

“I-I wouldn’t cheat on you, even if we were just fake married,” I heard him mumble so softly I questioned whether or not he actually said it.

I took a shower in the morning, then realized I forgot my clothes. I walked out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel, then ran into what felt like a brick wall.

“Oh,” Eli said, “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I just forgot my clothes,” I mumbled, kind of embarrassed that I didn’t see him.

“Oh, sorry,” he said quietly. Eli had been acting strange all morning, and I’m not sure why. Eli and I were practically best friends, and now everything was…well…awkward. Obviously this whole fake marriage thing was going to make things weird.

I finished getting ready, and headed downstairs. Eli was watching TV, so I sat down beside him. He wrapped his arm around the back of the couch, and absentmindedly started stroking my hair.

The doorbell rang, and Eli’s mother rushed to get it. It was Evan, Eli’s older brother.

“Little brother, I heard you popped the question!” He walked in, smiling.

“Yeah, this is Sam,” Eli smiled.

“Wait, THE Sam? Your roommate Sam? The Sam you’ve had a crush on forever and talk about all the time?” Evan smiled. Eli clenched his jaw, and nodded. I smiled and kissed the corner of Eli’s lips, but he turned his head and pecked me on the lips. He was just trying to prove the ‘in love’ act, I bet.

“Oh, give her a real kiss!” his grandma cheered. Eli shrugged slightly and quickly tucked a loose piece of hair behind my ear, leaning in.

His lips were warm and soft. Our lips moved in sync, and it was one of those amazing once-in-a-lifetime kisses that make you go weak in the knees even if you’re not standing, the kind of kisses that send off fireworks and leave you aching for more.

He pulled away all too soon, and smiled slightly. Obviously I hadn’t been the only one who’d felt that.

“You know, in the beginning, I thought Sam was a guy, until he told me how cute she was,” Evan laughed.

“She’s definitely a girl,” Eli mused quietly, and Evan chuckled in response, then left to go finish unpacking. I laid my head in Eli’s lap as we watched TV. He ran his fingers through my hair softly, but neither of us said a word.

Eli’s cell phone rang, and he answered it. I went back to our bedroom so I could get out my laptop and write some. I hadn’t written any in a few days, so I had ideas that I wanted to get down.

“Hey,” Eli said, walking in and sitting down on the bed.

“Hi,” I replied, looking up at him as my fingers continued to type on the keyboard.

“That was Miranda,” he said quietly.

“Oh, what did she want?”

“She asked if we would go on a double date with her,” he said.

“Did you tell her yes?” I asked.

“…Yeah,” he replied, lying down on the bed.

“Okay, where are we going?” I asked.

“Out to eat, then I don’t know. I think she said something about a movie.”

“You think?” I asked, chuckling.

“Well, I had other things to think about,” he smirked.

“Them being…what?”

“How f*cking amazing of a kisser you are,” he mumbled.

“Language!” I laughed.

“Really, Sam? I compliment you, and you only hear the cuss word?”

“Pretty much,” I said, “When do we leave for this shin-dig?”

“Eight.”
