I fell in love with Dante Moretti, never knowing he was once engaged to my older sister, Celeste Hart.

It was the kind of secret that changed everything.

Lia's POV
+

The three days had crawled by like a lifetime.
+

Today was the day where Dante was going to find out the truth about the kid, anddddd I couldn't handle being trapped within the suffocating walls of the penthouse for a single second longer.
+

If that report came back positive, if that little girl was biologically his, I knew I would completely fall apart and cry.
+

I needed normalcy.
+

I needed to pretend my life hadn't gone to hell.
+

So I had escaped to a quiet café in a corner booth, trying to lose myself in the normlacy.
+

I let out a sigh, lifting my mug to take a slow sip of my hot tea but before the tea could even touch my lips, the light in the booth was completely blocked out. A massive shadow fell over the table and a man sat down directly in front of me.
+

My breath caught in my throat as I froze.
+

He was a huge man. Tall, broad and intimidating enough that the air around him seemed to change the second he walked in. There was something dangerous about him too, something cold and controlled that made it hard to look away from him.
+

His dark hair was slicked back, exposing the hard lines of his face like the stubble along his jaw or the pale scar that cut across his upper lip.
+

He wore a black designer suit that looked like it had been made specifically for him, every inch of him giving off power and wealth.... But the black cane resting beside him caught my attention. He wasn't old, not even close. He looked to be in his late thirties which made it obvious the cane wasn't there because he needed it.
+

It was there because he wanted people to notice, because it was another reminder of exactly who he was. A man who didn't need to raise his voice to be feared.
+

That man was Diego Herrera.
+

Panic flooded my veins as my instinct was to scream, to reach for my bag or to call out to the barista.
+

"If you call for help, I shoot the baby in the stroller," Diego said, his voice came out as a terrifyingly purr that barely carried across the table.
+

My eyes darted instantly to the side. A young mother had just put her infant to sleep in a stroller three tables away. I swallowed hard, the lump in my throat feeling like broken glass before I gave him a stiff nod, forcing my hands to rest flat on my thighs so he couldn't see them shake.
+

"You are Mr. Herrera," I said, my voice remarkably calm despite the terror drumming in my chest.
+

"Yes, Mrs. Moretti," Diego replied, as a dark glimmer flickered in his pitch-black hooded eyes.
+

I swallowed hard again. It seemed the cartel boss had done a background check of his own. "What are you doing here? What do you want from me?"
+

"So you know who I am?" Diego asked, tilting his head slightly.
+

"Yes. I know."
+

Diego nodded slowly as a second later, a waitress approached the table, her hands visibly trembling as she set down a mug of black coffee. Diego was undeniably handsome in a dark predatory way, but he radiated an aura so violent it felt like he could kill anyone in the room on the spot without blinking.
+

The waitress practically rushed away, eager to escape his line of sight.
+

"Why are you here?" I repeated, staring across the table at the monster from the photograph.
+

"I am visiting a few relatives in New York," Diego said casually, reaching out to wrap his fingers around the coffee mug as I spotted thick scars running along his knuckles and fingers. "One of them being the New York mafia. My younger brother is the boss here."
+

My heart hammered against my ribs as I gulped down my fear. "Why are you sitting here with me?"
+

"I saw a pretty woman sitting all alone and I thought I might come over and say hello," Diego murmured, taking a slow sip of his black coffee.
+

"Keep your compliments to yourself," I snapped, my journalistic instinct to push back. "Stop beating around the bush."
+

Diego let out a dark chuckle that vibrated in his chest.
+

"Atta girl," he murmured, setting the coffee mug down. "Your sister....."
+

I froze completely, my muscles locking up. "Celeste Hart?"
+

"Yes, her," Diego said, his eyes narrowing. "She took something from me."
+

"Let me guess," I said, a bitter edge cutting through my voice. "Your money? She steals from absolutely everyone. It's her favorite hobby."
+

Diego burst into a sudden laugh, clearly amused by my boldness. "The money can be forgotten, hermosa. The money is nothing especially since I already harvested her lover and his cousin's organs as payment. I got my pound of flesh for that."
+

What in the actual fuck? How could those words leave his mouth so easily? He sounded completely detached like he was discussing today's high gas prices.
+

"Then what did she take?" I managed to say.
+

The man's smile vanished, replaced by an expression of coldness. "My daughter."
+

I stared at him, completely thrown off balance. My mind scrambled to piece the timeline together. "What..... w-what are you talking about?"
+

"Celeste took my daughter with her when she fled Mexico and she thought she could get away with it," Diego stated flatly.
+

A look of shock crossed my face before my hands gripped the edge of the table. "Are you talking about that twelve-year-old girl? The one who looks exactly like Dante?"
+

Diego let out another dark chuckle, shaking his head. "She is ten, not twelve. Celeste altered the records."
+

"But..... but Dante said he was doing a DNA test today," I stammered, the fairytale and the nightmare colliding in my head. "He's waiting for the results right now."
+

Diego dismissed it with a wave of his scarred hand. "That man can completely forget about a DNA test. The girl is mine."
+

Right at that exact moment, my phone began to ring loudly on the table. The screen lit up with Dante's name as my heart leaped into my throat.
+

I reached out with a trembling finger and immediately silenced the call, refusing to answer it with a cartel boss sitting inches away.
+

Diego watched the screen go dark, a mocking smirk touching his scarred lip. "Dante will be deeply hurt if you don't pick up, Mrs. Moretti."
+

I ignored the taunt. I leaned across the table, looking directly into those pitch-black eyes, all fear suddenly replaced by a desperate desire to be rid of the plague in my life. "Please..... just take that woman wherever the hell you want. Take her back to Mexico because we don't want her here. She is a psychotic bitch, she is a lying snake and she is a stalker."
+

Diego let out another amused chuckle, leaning back against the booth. "Aren't you scared of me, hermosa? If this was my wife you were talking about, I would have slit your throat across this table by now."
