Werewolf

*18+ read at your discretion!* My hands tremble by my sides. "Don't sleep with her..." He steps toward me, his eyes dark. "Why not?" "Whatever you were planning to do to her tonight, do it to me instead," I whisper. *** Ayah has always been unremarkable in every way other than in the power she wields. Since she was little she has been able to heal even the most fatal of wounds. Because of this, her father has locked her away, keeping her powers safe from the outside world. That is, until a man appears below her balcony, giving her a glimpse into the freedom she could finally have. However, the moment she starts to trust him, he takes her captive, revealing his identity to be a powerful Alpha who needs her to heal his younger sister. But when the girl's illness becomes impossible for Ayah to heal, she is dragged on a journey beside the Alpha to find an amplifier. On the way she learns their connection goes deeper than their heated attraction, to a soul bond neither can deny.

~Ayah

I stare at Riley across from me, trying not to tremble.

His hands are damp in mine, squeezing so hard I've lost circulation. A Minister of some kind stands to our side, prattling off a bunch of nonsense and asking us to repeat it.

For a marriage ceremony, this is incredibly unromantic.

A cool breeze drifts against my neck as we stand near open doors, a view of the fog cloaked mountains in the distance. A few steps away, our guests stand, consisting of only Zaon, Raven and Blake.

This is a binding marriage, but it's not real. Not in any way that counts. I must remind myself of that.

... [complete text omitted for brevity]...

"Trust me, that won't be an issue." A muscle in his jaw ticks. "You saved my mother's life. In the one who owes you."

I shake my head. He doesn't realize how little effort it took for me to heal his mother. Maybe it depleted my energy and made me a little light headed, but it's natural to me, what I should be doing. He shouldn't be marrying me, tying himself to me when his mate is out there.

"Never mind that. You've done enough for me." I rest my hands on the ice slicked railing.

He sidles a little closer to me. I watch him out the side of his eye, seeing the conflict on his face. Is he about to realize I'm right, and he's doing too much for me? Will I have to marry Slate?

"I still think I should get you out of here," he murmurs lowly, glancing back inside to ensure Zaon isn't nearby. "No Alpha can be trusted with your magic. They will always find an excuse to use you until it kills you."

I sigh, rubbing my arm. "I'm inclined to agree."

His face brightens. "So we leave, then?"

I frown, chewing absently on my lower lip.

I've thought about leaving almost every day since I got here. I'm a prisoner, regardless of the agreement between us. If I were to escape, with Riley and Blake's help, I could put some distance between Zaon and I... enough to make a life for myself. Sure, he wouldn't stop hunting me down, but I could become someone unrecognizable.

But that's not what I want anymore.

I thought it might be because of my attraction to Zaon, our strange connection. But upon further reflection, I know it's because of Iris.

I can't leave that girl to die, which she will. Soon she will need my magic to sustain her like my mother, and then there will be no going back. She deserves to live, and I can give her that.

I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I didn't do this.

"I want to heal Iris first," I tell him firmly. "Something is doing this, and I want to know I'm strong enough to overcome it."

He takes my hand, his skin not that much warmer than the balcony railing. "It could kill you."

"Not with an amplifier, it won't," I say, although a buzz of uncertainty twists in my stomach.

When I touched the flower in the forest, its power surged through me, knocking me completely unconscious. I was unprepared, and utterly exhausted, but how much of a toll on my body would the amplifier take as I channeled it?

"I think you should leave earlier," he insists.

I hold my hand out, trying to shush him. If Zaon overheard him... I don't even want to think about his reaction.

"I'll think about it. Just... not now."

He blows out a breath, raking his fingers through his hair. He's torn, wanting to press me on it more but thankfully he refrains. He can't make me do what I don't want to, even if he is my husband.

"So, I heard you're coming to live with me." His smile is watery, hopeful.

"It's safer that way, with Raven. She's tried to kill me, and to have me assaulted," I explain. Sleeping on the couch at Blake and Riley's won't be easy, but I'm used to cramped spaces. "So if you don't mind—"

"Of course I don't mind. I would be happy to live with you." He bursts out into a grin so broad I blink, a little taken aback.

Maybe I've been burned so many times I can't find it in myself to trust Riley's intentions entirely, but his eagerness to be so kind and helpful unnerves me.

"You're so kind. Thank you," I breathe, looking away.

His hand slips out of mine to rest against my arm. "If you find your mate, feel free to end this marriage, by the way."

"I'm not interested in finding my mate, so you don't have to worry about that," I assure him.

If I'm ending this marriage, it's not because of a mate bond, that is for sure. It will be for freedom, to depart from this chapter of my life.

"Well, I hope you're ready to live with Blake as well." He steps closer.

"I can't wait. I really enjoy both of your company." It will be good to be around people who care about me, who are my friends.

He reaches out, brushing my windswept hair off my face. His touch is gently, tentative.

"I'm going to take care of you, okay?" He murmurs softly.

I nod, ignoring the lump in my throat.

"I believe you."
