My hands tremble by my sides. "Don't sleep with her..."
He steps toward me, his eyes dark. "Why not?"
"Whatever you were planning to do to her tonight, do it to me instead," I whisper.
Ayah has always been unremarkable in every way other than in the power she wields. Since she was little she has been able to heal even the most fatal of wounds. Because of this, her father has locked her away, keeping her powers safe from the outside world. That is, until a man appears below her balcony, giving her a glimpse into the freedom she could finally have. However, the moment she starts to trust him, he takes her captive, revealing his identity to be a powerful Alpha who needs her to heal his younger sister. But when the girl's illness becomes impossible for Ayah to heal, she is dragged on a journey beside the Alpha to find an amplifier. On the way, she learns their connection goes deeper than their heated attraction, to a soul bond neither can deny.

I knock on the door before I step back, sliding my hands into my pockets.
There's commotion from inside, the sound of footsteps, and then the door opens.
My guard stands there, looking back at me. Of all my staff, I never paid that much attention to him, until he caught the attention of Ayah. Now, I inspect him curiously, wondering what about him enticed her.
He is awfully unassuming, immediately recoiling at the sight of me. He stands several inches shorter than me, his eyes wide as he takes a single step backward until he seems to realise himself.
"Alpha." He clears his throat, wiping his hands down his front. I must have interrupted his meal. "It is an honour to see you at my home."
"I'm sure," I mutter, looking past him.
He has a nice home, from what I can see. Ayah intends to move in with him, to marry him, which has brought me to his doorstep.
"Can we speak?" I ask. He's just staring at me in slight horror. He's not entirely certain why I'm here, but I'm sure he has an idea.
"What about, sir?" He asks warily.
"Invite me in and you'll find out," I say impatiently.
Since I spent so much time trapped in Nevan's pack, a great deal of work has built up for me. Instead of dealing to it, I'm here, speaking to a guard. It isn't how I would prefer to be spending my day.
He clears his throat, shifting out of the way.
"Of course. Come in."
I step past him into the crowded space. It's well lived in, but tidy. Books are strewn everywhere, colourful quilts are splayed out over couches and there are portraits on the wall that have been painted by someone talented.
"This is quaint," I muse, sliding my hands into my pockets.
Riley stands awkwardly nearby. "It does my family just fine."
"You haven't moved out? I know I pay you a good wage."
Will Ayah be okay moving into this family home? She seems fond of the other girl living here, Blake, but I can't be so sure. I want to make sure, above all else, she'll be happy here as much as she will be safe.
"I make plenty of money, but my mother was terminally ill. My sister and I spent a lot of our money looking after her," he explains hastily, watching me tread a path through his living room. "Now that she has recovered, I've been meaning to get my own place."
I twist to face him, feeling a muscle in my jaw twinge.
Do I want Ayah living alone with this male? He's awfully unassuming looking, but he's a good guard. He's capable of protecting her, although not as good as my second, Slate.
"Ayah healed your mother, didn't she?" I muse, looking at a portrait on the wall that depicts their family.
"I'm eternally grateful to her. I'll never be able to repay her." He runs a hand down the back of his neck, shifting from foot to foot.
I sigh. "No, I can't imagine you will."
His gaze follows me as I wander around the room, taking everything in. I can't yet tell I'm curious about him, and what made Ayah willing to marry him, or if I'm scoping this place out to ensure it's good enough for her to live in.
Riley clears his throat. "May I ask why you're here, sir? While I am honoured, I assume there is a reason."
I turn to face him. "You agreed to marry Ayah, did you not?"
He immediately recoils, retreating a step. His eyes flash to the front door, and for a moment, I'm convinced he's going to rush toward it and flee.
If he did, I wouldn't complain. I wouldn't even have him followed.
"Please don't kill me," he pleads lowly.
I frown. "Why would I kill you?"
He grimaces, like he made a mistake.
"I...I don't know."
"Tell me," I demand.
He sweeps a hand through his hair, ruffling the straight lengths. His face has lost all its colour, and if he was sick at my feet, I wouldn't be surprised.
I'm not sure what he is so frightened of. I wouldn't have killed him long ago if that was my intention. He's doing me a favour, helping to keep Ayah in my pack so she can finish healing my sister.
"There are rumours, that you two are...involved," he says carefully.
I pause, working my jaw.
Were we seen, in the carriage together? Did Nevan's guards talk to my own after our time there? If my staff are talking, then of course Riley has heard the rumours.
"I'm not here to kill you, Riley. I'm here to tell you to marry Ayah," I state sternly.
His mouth drops open, his brows disappearing into the fringe of his hair. He wavers on his feet as he slowly takes in my command.
"Really?" He whispers.
"You have a day to consider."
Maybe he will decide he can't commit to this, and he will deny me. I know Ayah must be married for her safety, but a selfish part of me wishes this wouldn't happen. It means she has to move out, and she won't ever come back. It is just one step closer to her being gone forever.
But I won't allow my own feelings to compromise her safety, or her happiness.
Riley blinks, seeming to realise himself suddenly. "I don't need to consider it. I'll do it."
I suppose I should commend his loyalty. He's following my command without a single question to the contrary.
Yet somehow, I don't think my command means anything to him. He wants to marry Ayah.
"Very well. You marry tomorrow," I say flippantly.
"Tomorrow?"
I pin him with a look. "Do I need to repeat myself?"
He shakes his head, watching as I sink down onto his couch that is overwhelmed with far too many blankets. I drag one out of my way irritably, wondering if Riley will sleep on this couch once Ayah moves in, or if he will insist they share a bed.
The thought of the latter makes me wrathful, but I press that feeling down.
"No, I'm sorry." He rubs his face, but it does little to smooth out the lines of confusion marring his face. "Why so soon?"
"She is in danger. I need to secure her position in this pack," I explain calmly, draping my arms over the back of the couch.
Riley slowly sits on the arm of the chair to the side of me, like he doesn't want to take up space in his own home.
"I can protect her, sir," he assures me lowly.
The corner of my mouth tilts up. "Can you now?"
"Yes. I will do everything that I can for her."
To his credit, he's taking this seriously. There isn't a hint of uncertainty about him. Maybe it's overconfidence, but what matters is Ayah has someone who is willing to give up everything to keep her safe.
And from what I can tell about Riley, he'll do exactly that.
"Naturally, within my pack, marriages can be lawfully ended at any point. If she finds someone at a later time that she wants to be with, I am sure you will permit her that." I don't release him from the intensity of his stare, hoping he can see it as the warning it is.
If he ever feels the need to trap her in a marriage with him, I'll kill him. I don't care where he flees to, I'll find him.
"I will. I promise you, I'm a good person. I would never hurt her," he insists. His face contorts as if I've insulted his entire family.
"No, you won't." I let my words hang in the air before I persist onward. "I assume you won't make me waste my breath explaining what will happen to you if you do hurt her, in any capacity whatsoever."
His jaw tightens, his gaze dipping to the floor.
"Not you don't have to," he murmurs.
"Good."
We sit in silence for a moment. I've said what I came to say, and Riley has agreed to marry Ayah. This is good, and I should leave before I push it too far.
Yet, I can't stop staring at him. I can't stop staring at his shirt tucked into his pants, the buttons done all the way up to his collarbones. I can't stop staring at his hair, which would be perfectly fashioned if he hasn't been running his fingers through it incessantly.
Could Ayah fall in love with him? I'm sure it would be easier for her to be with him, than for her to be with me. I have Raven, and this pack, and everything she doesn't want.
I hate this situation, but what can I do?
"Does it please you, knowing you will be married to her?" I ask softly.
He straightens, looking at me uncertainly. He's trying to decipher my intentions, but I don't even know what those are.
"I want to help in any way that I can," he responds quietly.
"But does it please you, to know to some degree, she will be yours."
He looks out the window, at the snow stirring outside. It's getting late. By the time I return home, it will be dark, and Ayah will be in bed. Thankfully, she already knows why I've come down here, even if she didn't seem that pleased about it.
Riley rubs his jaw thoughtfully. "Are you asking me if I have feelings for her?"
My stomach twists. Is that something I want to know?
I simply shrug.
"I suppose I am happy. Ayah is beautiful, and she is selfless. She can do so much good, and it will be an honour to be someone who can protect her from danger," he admits, speaking more to himself than me. He even lays his palm on his chest like he's making a pledge.
I nod distractedly. "Mmm, indeed."
Protecting Ayah from the danger is all I want, but I can't. I can't protect her from Raven, nor can I protect her from her father. I got lucky with our encounter with Elex's advisor. What happens if next time, he brings an entire army to retrieve her?
"Are you bothered, sir?" Riley asks tentatively. "I don't mean to offend you, but you don't seem happy about this union."
I stand abruptly. "It needs to be done."
"So you're not attracted to her then? You don't even have a little bit of the feelings people claim you have for her?" He asks.
For a split second, I don't have any control over my body. One moment, I'm near the couch and the next I'm pulling Riley up from where he is sitting by the collar of his shirt.
"Don't you ever, ask me that again. Do you understand?" I command lowly.
He holds his hands up defensively, his voice trembling. "Yes sir, I didn't mean—"
"Quiet." I let him go, stepping back. "Serve your purpose, and do so well."
He nods eagerly. "Yes sir."
I leave the home, my mind heavy. Tomorrow Ayah marries. Then, she heals Iris.
After that...I don't know.
