My hands tremble by my sides. "Don't sleep with her..."
He steps toward me, his eyes dark. "Why not?"
"Whatever you were planning to do to her tonight, do it to me instead," I whisper.

Ayah has always been unremarkable in every way other than in the power she wields. Since she was little she has been able to heal even the most fatal of wounds. Because of this, her father has locked her away, keeping her powers safe from the outside world. That is, until a man appears below her balcony, giving her a glimpse into the freedom she could finally have. However, the moment she starts to trust him, he takes her captive, revealing his identity to be a powerful Alpha who needs her to heal his younger sister. But when the girl's illness becomes impossible for Ayah to heal, she is dragged on a journey beside the Alpha to find an amplifier. On the way she learns their connection goes deeper than their heated attraction, to a soul bond neither can deny.

I've contemplated murder before. But never with this much sincerity.
Slowly sipping at the splash of Nevan's father's expensive alcohol collection, I sit morosely in the corner of the room. Ayah and Nevan are in the centre, dancing animatedly to a soft drift of music.

Well, Ayah dances. Nevan sways a little a foot away, watching her. His gaze is locked so tightly on her body, the glass in my hand threatens to fracture.
I hate that he clearly wants her. I hate that she looks so fucking good right now.

Wearing the dress Nevan offered her, she twirls around on unstable feet, her wild dark hair twisting around her face as she shakes her head from side to side. The cuts into the sides of her dress reveal a flash of skin each time she raises her arms.

Heat pulses through me, targeting my groin. I'm so attracted to Ayah it aches. Resisting her is a special kind of torture.

Seeing Nevan appreciate her as ardently is a special kind of torment.

"I like your energy," he tells her as she dashes around the billiard table before spinning, the skirt of her dress flaring, revealing the bare expanse of her upper thighs.

It seems her injured ankle is entirely forgotten. I'm assuming it's the alcohol. She'll come to regret that by morning time.

"You've spilt many gold coins worth of my best alcohol on these fine rugs, but it's worth it to see that smile," Nevan declares with a dazzling one of his own.

Sure enough, spirits drip from Ayah's glass and down her hand as she dances around. When she breezes past the other Alpha, he plucks the glass from her hand and sets it down.

"You're so nice," she giggles.

"Feel free to join us, Zaon." Nevan casts a glance at me, realizing I've been watching, brooding. "Unless the view is good from there."

"I'll pass on the dancing." I drain the rest of my glass.

Nevan shrugs, grabbing Ayah's hand. He yanks her close, closing the gap between them. Her chest and stomach land flush against him, her head tipping back as she laughs. He spins her, nearly sending them both toppling to the floor.

The moment his hand winds past her hair to cup the back of her neck, his head lowering close to hers, I set my glass down and stand.

"Fine, my turn with Ayah," I announce.

Nevan slips me a knowing look, but releases Ayah who looks at me with widened eyes. The last time we danced together, she was drunk and grinding against me.

"Very well friend. I need another drink anyway." Nevan collapses into his chair, reaching for the almost empty bottle.

The moment I get within a foot of Ayah, she collapses into my arms with her entire body weight, laughing hysterically. I'm not sure what is so funny, but I enjoy seeing her so bright and unburdened.

She looks up at me, silvery eyes catching the light. They are so round and big, although slightly glazed from intoxication.

"You're going to dance with me?" She asks under her breath, dragging her lip between her teeth.

My hands press into her waist, keeping her upright against me. Her arms drape over my shoulders, her face tilted upward.

I lean forward, my mouth brushing against her ear. "Be careful with Nevan."

She shivers from the sensation of my breath against her skin. "Why? Trying to ruin my fun?"

"What exactly do you want out of tonight?"

I can't tell if she is genuinely interested in Nevan, or if she is baiting me. If it is the latter, it's working. Seeing her close to him is driving me to the verge of madness. I want to pick her up and carry her far away from Nevan's probing stare.

"I haven't decided yet." She shrugs, her smile struck with a salacious curve. "Offering anything?"

I glance at Nevan, who is busily filling another glass. He'll be feeling the impact of tonight's mirth in the morning, that is for sure.

"You're not acting right," I say lowly.

"Maybe I'm getting the taste of fun, and I'm liking it. Maybe I'm finally decided what I want." Her words slur a little at the edges, tumbling from her mouth haphazardly.

I frown. "What could you possibly want with him?"

She opens her mouth to respond, until Nevan calls out from where he sits.

"Alright Zaon, not enough dancing or drinking." He states, clapping his hands together. I didn't even realize I wasn't dancing, just standing here with Ayah in my arms. "Your dancing privileges have been revoked. Come sit with me."

He motions at the seat next to him, grinning.

Sighing through my nose, I leave Ayah to continue dancing on her own — which she does surprisingly well considering her level of intoxication — to sit down beside Nevan.

I can feel him studying the side of my face. "You seem tense."

"I'm tired. That's all," I mumble, watching Ayah twirl around as if there aren't two males watching her.

"We used to have fun, you and me." I can't tell if he's goading me, or if he's sad that isn't our reality anymore.

I haven't viewed life through a similar lens to him in a while. Not since everything has happened to me. We've both experienced grief, we've just reacted to it in different ways.

If only I could see it his way. Everything, in his mind, has good in it.

"A lot has changed. I lost my mother and I lost Iris," I explain softly, hoping Ayah doesn't overhear. Thankfully, she is too busy enjoying herself on the other side of the room to pay us much mind.

"You're clearly enamoured by Ayah. I've never seen this before," he murmurs.

I swallow thickly. I hoped he saw a connection between us, just not the one I'm beginning to suspect is growing. There is so much more to how I feel about her than just the girl who is going to heal my sister.

"It's just sex." I sigh, folding my hands over his stomach.

"Is it?"

I shrug with one shoulder. "She's a bit of fun. Don't read into anything unnecessarily."

He hums thoughtfully, returning to watching her. Were I not so pressed for ideas, I would have come up with another idea for why we were out in the forest, and what she is to me. The problem is her accent, and that word may be going around that Elex is out searching for his daughter. His advisor and his cronies haven't exactly been subtle.

"Then I suppose you don't mind me talking about how stunning this girl is," he muses softly, distractedly.

"You're not wrong." I sigh, contemplating the best excuse to get Ayah and I out of this room as soon as possible.

His hands tighten around the arms of his chair. "How's she in bed?"

"We're a perfect match." If he thinks he's getting details, he's out of his mind.

Not that much of how I truly feel can be brought to words. My entire body aches for Ayah whenever I'm around her. Intimate moments feel like a soul connection beyond anything I've ever felt before. I can't exactly tell Nevan that.

"Cryptic." He rubs his jaw. "Compared to Raven?"

"You can't compare Ayah to Raven. Ayah exists in an entirely different realm to my wife," I tell him. It's true.

"So you're keeping her?"

"For now."

"Mind passing her on when you're done?" He offers me a wry grin he thinks will disarm me. I've made it clear I'm not interested in sharing her. He's relentless.

I give him a hard look. "I'm going to ask you not to speak about her like this anymore."

He leans closer, his eyes flashing. The more he presses, the more suspicious about the nature of our relationship he becomes. I can tell he knows I'm hiding something. He's looking for weaknesses in my façade, trying to root out what's beneath.

"Touchy, huh? I thought there weren't feelings involved."

"It's just common decency," I snap, glancing at the drink in his hand. "Now shut up. You're drunk."

He grins, downing the last dregs of his drink.

"Ayah sweetheart, come here. It's time I make my proposition." He pats the seat next to him, breaking her dancing trance.

She wanders closer, legs practically tangling around each other as she stumbles. She has the presence of mind not to sit herself next to Nevan, opting to sit in the seat next to mine instead.

"Go on then," she encourages, wiping strands of hair off her flushed face.

Nevan leans forward, bracing his forearms against his thighs, steepling his fingers. There is something dark and sinister in his eyes, making me aware of his proposition before he makes it.

"Let's fuck. All three of us," he announces, clasping his hands together.

"No," I say immediately.

Ayah's eyes are wide as she looks between us both. "All three of us?"

"The pleasure of having two men focused wholly on you is unlike anything you've ever experienced before," Nevan purrs, taking in her body with no shame at all. He can't wait another moment to get his hands on her.

Repulsion kicks into my stomach. I wasn't lying about not wanting to share. Even so, I wouldn't trust Nevan with her, not after the way he speaks about her.

"That does sound nice," Ayah admits vacantly, staring off into space.

In theory, maybe she thinks she would enjoy it, but not with Nevan, and not for her first time. How does she expect to explain that to Nevan, who believes she's my mistress.

"I'm saying no." I lean back, removing myself from his sick equation.

He offers a faux pout. "Why old friend? We've shared women before, haven't we?"

"Raven doesn't count; she..." I drift off. We never took Raven to bed at the same time, either.

"She's your wife. Ayah is just a mistress." His tone is more pressing, more desperate. He's trying to corner me, to force this. "Just fun, like you said."

I grit my teeth together.

"I'm not fucking her with you."

Nevan rubs his face, digging his fingers into the tense lines there. Why doesn't he just back off?

"Fine." He looks away from me. "How about just you and me, Ayah?"

Her eyes widen and she glances at me. Written in every part of her face is sudden disinterest in Nevan's proposition. She doesn't like the idea of being left alone with him, and I can't blame her.

"No, Nevan. That's enough." I stand. I need to get her out of here. I've made it to the end of my tether, in more ways than one.

"Come on. It could be fun," he insists. "Come on Ayah. You have no idea the pleasure I can afford you."

"Listen—"

I don't give her the chance to respond, leaning down to scoop her up off her chair before I toss her up over my shoulder. She shrieks in protest, but I ignore her, turning to pin Nevan with a glare.

"I can pleasure her just fine on my own, Nevan. She doesn't need to go elsewhere," I tell him. "I'm taking her to bed."

He doesn't respond as I walk Ayah out of the room and down the hall.

She pounds on my back, her voice echoing down the corridor. "Zaon! Put me down!"

"I will."

I continue walking until I spot a door leading to the outside. I veer toward it, my mind stuck on a singular purpose.

"Right now!" She snaps as I lug open the door, stepping out onto the porch.

I oblige her command, setting her down in the rain, giving her a little push so she has to step back into it. The downpour immediately flattens her hair to her head, streaming down her skin and wetting her beautiful dress.

"Ah! It's freezing out here." She tries to step under the safety of the eaves, but I grab her arm and hold her still.

"Good. It might snap you out of this drunken state," I growl.

"I'm fine. I'm not as drunk as you think." She wrestles my arm off her, but she doesn't step out of the rain. The storm wildly billows around her, but it is nothing compared to what rages in her eyes when she looks at me.

It seems she's accepting what is good for her right now. She needs to snap out of it.

"You were going to say yes to a threesome with Nevan," I hiss, remembering her odd willingness when he first brought it up.

"I was just thinking about it." She shifts uneasily, wrapping her arms around herself. "You keep denying me."

I stare at her, at her furrowed brow, at her trembling lower lip. Ayah has always had her mind set on freedom, of making something of her life beyond her father and me. Now, with the same surety, she has decided she wants me.

"Is that what you really want?" I ask breathlessly, feeling the wind brush rain over my face.

She gazes up at me through her lashes, biting down on her lower lip. "I mean..."

"Do you really want to me to fuck you?"

"I wouldn't say no, exactly," she admits softly.

I'm going to regret this, I know it. But I'm tired of this game, of being perpetually tempted by her. If she wants this, I won't deny her any longer.

"Fine, I'll do it."

She blinks. "You will?"

"You have the rest of tonight and tomorrow to contemplate this. You're going to give it serious thought, and if I don't hear a no by midnight tomorrow, I'll come to the room and fuck you. Sound good?" I angle my head, satisfied with my decision.

She has plenty of time to pull away, to decide this isn't really what she wants.

"Uh..."

"Yes or no, Ayah?" I press.

She nods eagerly, averting her eyes to her feet. "Yes."

"Come inside when you're ready." I turn on my heel, not glancing over my shoulder as I leave her to consider my offer.
