*18+ read at your discretion!* My hands tremble by my sides. "Don't sleep with her..." He steps toward me, his eyes dark. "Why not?" "Whatever you were planning to do to her tonight, do it to me instead," I whisper.
Ayah has always been unremarkable in every way other than in the power she wields. Since she was little she has been able to heal even the most fatal of wounds. Because of this, her father has locked her away, keeping her powers safe from the outside world. That is, until a man appears below her balcony, giving her a glimpse into the freedom she could finally have. However, the moment she starts to trust him, he takes her captive, revealing his identity to be a powerful Alpha who needs her to heal his younger sister. But when the girl's illness becomes impossible for Ayah to heal, she is dragged on a journey beside the Alpha to find an amplifier. On the way she learns their connection goes deeper than their heated attraction, to a soul bond neither can deny.

I'm really not in the mood for this tonight.
We lounge in Nevan's billiard room, which is all dark wood and sumptuous velvet furniture. He has his feet kicked up on a short table in front of him, facing where Ayah and I sit on a lounge chair opposite him.
I swirl my drink around my short glass, weighing up the risk of offending Nevan by removing Ayah from this room, from his heavy stare.
"That storm is unfavorable, isn't it?" He gestures at the window next to us, at the rain slashing against the glass.
It's so convenient for him that this storm won't relent. We're stuck here.
"I've always liked thunder. We would get plenty of it back home." Ayah gazes dreamily at the window. The lighting in here is dark enough that she can see through to the night sky outside.
Nevan sips his drink. "Home? Where are you from, Ayah?"
"She comes from Alpha Elex's pack," I say for her, not wanting to risk her revealing too much about herself. "There is something incredibly satisfying about taking his women."
"I agree, insufferable shut-in of a man that he is." Nevan shudders at the thought of past interactions with Elex.
Ayah lowers her gaze. A flurry of emotions shift over her face, and when she looks back up, she's determined.
"He's mourning his wife," she declares.
I keep my grimace inward. Even still, she defends her father. I don't blame her, I just feel sad. Nevan is entirely indifferent to her objections, but it's clear he senses a change in the air.
"Time to move on, I think." He leans forward.
"Drink, Ayah?"
"Yes please—"
"No, she better not." I give Nevan a sharp look, a warning.
His alcohol is strong, and he wants to lower Ayah's guard. I'm not sure what might accidentally slip if she gets too intoxicated, and how comfortable Nevan will feel getting closer to her as her inhibitions lower.
He pauses with the bottle of spirits in hand. "Why not?"
Ayah angles her head, pinning me with a dark smile. "Yeah Zaon. Why not?"
My jaw tightens. She's punishing me. She wants me to take her to bed, and it's my fault. I showed her pleasure when I shouldn't have, promising her what I cannot give her.
"Spirits are too strong for her," I explain. "I... I need her mind clear for tonight."
Nevan smiles knowingly.
"Oh come on, it's not often I get to celebrate with my friend and his beautiful new mistress." He pops the cork off the bottle, pouring the liquid into a short crystal glass. "It's just one night."
Ayah twists in her seat, smiling demurely at him. My fingers tighten where they grip the edge of the seater. Her being dressed so lethally in a dark blue dress Nevan had brought up to our room for her is only making the situation worse. The neckline dips low between her breasts, the light fabric draping over every curve of her body.
If I'm appreciating her appearance, then so is Nevan.
"Well, I can speak for myself, and I say yes. I would love a drink," Ayah exclaims, reaching her hand out.
"Excellent. This was my father's stock." Nevan slides the glass into her hand, looking pleased within himself. "Before he got sick, that is."
Ayah takes a small sip of the alcohol. She plays it off well, but I note the slight twist of her lips at the strength of the spirits and its bitterness.
"What is wrong with him?" She asks breezily, although her probing makes me nervous.
Ayah is far too caring of a person. It's why she's here, fighting so hard to heal Iris. I know she wants her freedom, but even if I did let her leave now, I don't think she would. The problem is, if she cares about Nevan's father, she'll try to heal him.
"Oh nobody knows. He suffers every day and it pains me." Nevan drains his glass before reaching to fill another. "Wow, what a buzzkill am I, huh?"
"I'm sorry—"
"Drink up. I have a game for us to play." He smiles tightly, ceasing any further conversation on the topic.
I feel for my friend and know exactly what he is experiencing. I also empathize with his lack of interest in talking about it, especially when he is trying to keep this night light.
Ayah straightens. "A game?"
"Each of us take turns naming something we have done before. Those who haven't take a drink." He raises his glass, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "Don't be too specific, but have fun with it. It's a great way to learn about each other's sordid pasts."
I frown. Ayah has experienced so little, there is no doubt she'll be drinking the most out of any of us.
"A touch uncreative, Nevan?" I raise my brow at him, hoping he can hear the warning in my tone.
He merely shrugs, sweeping his gaze back to Ayah. "Simple but effective, I say."
I try to catch her gaze but she is staring back at Nevan, leaning forward with obvious interest. She wants to have fun — I can't blame her. But the more Nevan inquires into her life, the more likely it will be that he will reveal the truth about her identity, and subsequently, her powers.
"Spirits are far too strong for a drinking game. We should switch—"
"We'll just have a sip each turn. Come on, let's sit and get started." Nevan settles into his seat, simmering with anticipation.
Once he's decided on something, it is difficult to stop it from proceeding. It's best I sit back and make sure this doesn't spiral out of control.
"Who's starting?" Ayah asks.
"Zaon. Why don't you show Ayah how the game works?" Nevan looks pointedly at me, knowing we've played this game together before.
The difference is, Raven was present, not Ayah. I didn't mind Nevan flirting with my wife then, nor when he took her upstairs with him. This is different, though. I never felt anything for Raven.
"Very well," I sigh. "I've... read a book from start to finish."
Ayah grins. "Oh, I've done that many times."
I nod vacantly. My disinterest is feigned — I chose that question because I knew Ayah wouldn't have to drink.
"A sufficient example to start, I suppose." Nevan himself doesn't drink either. "Your turn, Ayah."
She hums to herself as she thinks, a small line gathering between her furrowed brows. She may not have done much in her life, but she is still a remarkable person. Through her healing, she has done so much more than most people ever will in their lives.
"I have saved a life before," she states decidedly.
I raise my glass to my mouth, but Nevan puts out his and.
"Don't drink, Zaon. We save lives daily by commanding our packs, avoiding wars and feeding the people," he exclaims, the dim lighting casting shadows in the hollows of his cheeks.
"That doesn't count." I take a sip of the alcohol, keeping it small. Alcohol doesn't affect Nevan and I in the same way it will Ayah. I could drink the entire body and only feel a mild buzz, but I want to ensure I keep a clear mind regardless.
"Fine." Nevan drinks a more generous mouthful. "Whose life did you save, Ayah?"
Her eyes widen, realizing the corner she's backed herself into. She can't very well tell Nevan she's healed someone without needing to explain her powers.
"A woman's," she states carefully, smoothing her hands over her lap. "I...swam into a lake and saved her from drowning."
Relief presses down upon me. The alcohol is reddening her cheeks, but it hasn't taken her ability to think quickly.
"How admirable," Nevan praises. "My turn."
I hold my breath, knowing the way he plays this game. Ayah and I haven't been nearly as salacious in our admissions, which means he will have to compensate.
"I have had sex with Raven," he announces slyly.
Ayah jolts in her seat, like she's been electrocuted. Her drink nearly spills over the rim, but thankfully, she tugs calm over herself hastily.
"You have?"
"Many times." Nevan looks at me. "Zaon likes to share."
I hide my irritation as I take another sip. I'm not proud of taking Raven to bed, but I was once young, naïve and hopeful.
Nevan motions at a stunned Ayah, her lips parted as she looks between us both.
"Drink, Ayah, unless Zaon has shared his bed with you both." His teeth flash as he smiles tauntingly, shamelessly probing for more information.
Ayah hurriedly drinks. She takes in a large mouthful, which makes me stir in my seat. She's quelling her unease, which only pushes her closer to intoxication.
Nevan raises a brow at me. "Come on old friend. Your turn again."
I sigh through my nose, contemplating my options. There isn't much I can bring up to help Ayah avoid drinking, unfortunately. If I keep being evasive, Nevan will notice and only push harder.
"I have traveled to every pack in the land," I say tiredly.
Nevan doesn't drink, lids hooded as he watches Ayah take a warier sip. My teeth make a sound as they grind together.
"A goal, for you, to take your mistress traveling then," Nevan says breezily. Finally, something I agree with him on.
"Indeed."
"I have—" She hiccups, covering her mouth. "Oops. This is really kicking in."
I want to pluck the glass right out of her hand. She's getting drunk off a few mouthfuls, which means this game needs to come to a close soon.
"It's good stuff." Nevan picks up the bottle, topping her drink up. "Go on. Make it salacious. I haven't drank nearly enough."
Her voice drops to a rough, conspiratorial whisper. "I have been betrayed."
Her silvery eyes flick to mine, then back to Nevan's face.
My hand tightens around my glass, but I don't drink. Neither does Nevan. Being betrayed isn't exactly an uncommon occurrence for Alphas.
"Haven't we all?" He shrugs. "Who betrayed you, love?"
Love. I should kill him for speaking to her this way,
Unfortunately, I know Ayah is speaking about me. I want to remind her that her father's betrayal has persisted far longer — about her entire life — but I hold my tongue. I deserve her ire for what I did.
"A terrible man," she says. "An excellent liar, I must say. He makes you feel one way, then he makes you feel another. It's very confusing."
She leans back in her seat, her dress shifting around her legs. Nevan watches the movement, his tongue dragging across his lower lip. He's looking at her like he wants to eat her alive. It's maddening.
"Well I don't like the sound of him," he declares distractedly.
"Neither." She sighs. "But he's so good with his mouth and fingers. I crave it every day."
I stiffen. Nevan's eyes light up as he looks at me.
"You hear that old friend? You have competition." He laughs, resting a hand on his chest.
Ayah is staring at me, offering an opportunity to meet her challenge. Would she be this emboldened if it weren't for what is in her glass?
"I'd do anything to feel him—"
"Alright, Ayah has clearly drunk enough for the night. I'll take her to bed." I reach for her drink, but she holds it away, evading me.
"I'm fine—"
I stand. "No you're not. This is enough."
This room is suffocating. I cannot stand staring at her, looking the way that she does, saying what she is saying. It is unbearable. She has no idea what I think about doing to her, and the more she teases, the closer I am to bringing them to fruition.
Nevan stands, grabbing my arm. He leans close.
"The nights just started, friend." His grip tightens, his voice low and rough. "Don't ruin this for me."
I frown, taking him in. His dark eyes are narrowed into slits, irritation folding into every line of his face. Yet, as I notice it, it's swiftly masked behind his classic smile.
"Ruin what for you?" I ask quietly.
He releases me with a little shove, falling back into his seat. He props his foot back onto the small table, crossing them at the ankles.
"You need more drink, I say. Now sit so we can continue the game." He raises his brows, daring me to argue.
If we weren't trapped here, in his home, I would.
Slowly, I sit. Ayah seems warier now, clearly having witnessed our strange interaction. I'm not sure what has gotten into Nevan, but I don't like it.
"I have had a threesome before," he declares.
Ayah quickly drinks, a smile tilting her lips upward.
"Go on, drink Zaon. Unless you have," Nevan purrs.
I take a slow sip, knowing nothing like that has ever appealed to me. While Nevan may believe I like sharing, I don't. Not with someone I care about.
He looks surprised, head canting. "No, friend? Too possessive for that, huh?"
"Exactly."
He's visibly disappointed. Good. Let him realize I'm not offering my supposed mistress to him.
"I sure haven't." Ayah giggles, taking another sip even though there's no cause to.
"It's time for bed," I murmur softly.
Nevan pouts, leaning forward. "So soon? I haven't delivered my proposition yet."
"What proposition?" I ask warily.
He pauses, deciding against sharing. I get the feeling I know exactly what he plans to propose anyway.
"Well you'll just have to wait and see, won't you?" He sets his drink down, rubbing his hands together. "The night has much to reveal yet."
