My hands tremble by my sides. "Don't sleep with her..."

He steps toward me, his eyes dark. "Why not?"

"Whatever you were planning to do to her tonight, do it to me instead," I whisper.

Ayah has always been unremarkable in every way other than in the power she wields. Since she was little she has been able to heal even the most fatal of wounds. Because of this, her father has locked her away, keeping her powers safe from the outside world. That is, until a man appears below her balcony, giving her a glimpse into the freedom she could finally have. However, the moment she starts to trust him, he takes her captive, revealing his identity to be a powerful Alpha who needs her to heal his younger sister. But when the girl's illness becomes impossible for Ayah to heal, she is dragged on a journey beside the Alpha to find an amplifier. On the way she learns their connection goes deeper than their heated attraction, to a soul bond neither can deny.

Now that Ayah has sufficiently recovered, we've travelled a little further out of town to meet a man who I believe has an amplifier in his possession.
+
He operates a shop in a tiny shack, selling rare material he digs up from the base of the volcano. It's not a particularly favourable job, but it's dug up what I need.
+
Ayah looks around in amazement, gaping upward toward the peak of the volcano.
+
I take a brief moment to admire her dazed interest. We've just spent time in the simplest of towns, and yet she has been enamoured by everything she has seen. It makes me want to show her a world of real beauty, both beyond and within my pack.
+
That will never happen, though. This will have to do.
+
Approaching the shack, I brush back the long shroud of fabric over the door, minding it's ash stained exterior. Ayah ducks in under my arm, pausing to take in the ramshackle shack and all it's marvellous wares.
+
Most of his merchandise is large rocks propped on rickety tables. What catches Ayah's eye, however, are the scattering of brightly coloured jewels in a glass case. She immediately gravitates toward it, looming over it.
+
A smile threatens to rise at the corner of my lips, but I flatten it.
+
I feel in debt to her. I can't remember what it felt like to be without pain, and now that I am, I feel euphoric.
+
She's going to heal my sister, and once she has, I'm going to give her freedom. Permanently.
+
A man suddenly appears through a back door, wiping volcanic ash from his hands with a threadbare rag. He grins upon seeing us, dirt seated in the creases of his face.
+
"I know I was expecting you, but seeing you in person is quite a shock," he admits, holding his hand out to me.
+
I give it a firm shake, inspecting him.
+
He's a bit older then me, but not by much. Or, perhaps he's not, and the sun exposure and extreme conditions have worn out his face.
+
"It is?"
+
"You're exactly how they describe you." His vivid blue eyes travel along the extent of my person. "Tall and terrifying."
+
He holds his hands out in an exaggerated gesture before laughing roughly. The sound is coarse and jarring, lifting Dove's interest from a particularly thick chunk of amethyst.
+
The man, Jacob, catches sight of her. His entire demeanour shifts, his interest piqued by the beautiful woman who has wandered into his store.
+
I tense, inspecting his reaction closely. It's rare for someone to encounter Ayah and not be attracted to her, so this reaction isn't unsurprising.
+
Still, it bothers me. He better not get used to her proximity.
+
"Wow, and look at you," he marvels, sweeping over to her. "I'm assuming this amplifier is for you?"
+
"It is." Smartly, she doesn't hold her hand out to him to shake. "I'm Ayah."
+
"I thought the rumours about you weren't true." He brazenly looks over her body. "My late mother used to tell me a story about the hidden girl in Alpha Elex's pack who had magical powers."
+
My hands glide into my pockets in an effort to avoid choking the life out of him.
+
I don't like that rumour. Putting it to death is difficult when so many people know about my hunt for her magic. No one else has outside of this pack can ever find the rumour to be true.
+
"Did she ever say what those powers were?" Ayah asks, also unnerved by the what this man has overheard.
+
"No, but we loved to theorise." He grins. "I'm Jacob, by the way."
+
Ayah glances at me beneath dust flecked lashes. "Well, I'm not hidden anymore."
+
I can't decide if that's an unfortunate reality, or one I find myself grateful for.
+
"No, you're not." Jacob purrs, leaning against a display that shudders under his weight. "And the world is clearly better for it."
+
Ayah doesn't flush, unimpressed by his flattery. She turns her attention back to the amethyst, which is a relief.
+
"Alright, what is this amplifier?" I question, tired of his blatant flirting.
+
Jacob disappears out the back of the shop, and when he returns, he's holding a lump of rock in his hand.
+
"This is a piece of material dug up from one of the coal mines to the east," he explains. "This isn't the first unidentified material found there. It sits right atop a magical ley line."
+
I take it from him, inspecting it closely. It fits in the palm of my hand, the edges jagged and strangely formed. It has a heavy weight to it, and through the cracks I observe a pitch black substance amongst the dusky grey that piques my interest.
+
"So it contains magic?"
+
"That's the theory, although that can't be confirmed without someone who wields magic," he explains, eyes darting over to Ayah, who couldn't look less interested in this exchange.
+
I could ask Ayah to test this before I purchase, but I don't need Jacob's reporting about the nature of her magic to his friends. It's best to take my chance.
+
"It looks promising. We'll take it." I twist the rock in my hand, inspecting every craggy ridge. "What's your price?"
+
He rubs his face, smearing volcanic dust further along his jaw.
+
"I don't need much out here. I make a decent living and my expenses are low," he says gruffly. "So money isn't going to cut it."
+
I sigh through my nose. He's going to make this difficult for me.
+
"I can set up a direct line of trade for your materials to the village where my estate resides," I offer blandly. "It will take priority over already established ones."
+
"Tempting." A darkly mischievous spark flickers in his eyes. "It gets so lonely out here, you know. I might accept a wife."
+
My gaze snaps up to him from where it has been inspecting the amplifier.
+
"I don't trade women. That is forbidden in this pack," I remind him lethally.
+
"Fine, I'll accept just a night with one."
+
"Like I said—"
+
He looks at Ayah, inspecting her with renewed interest.
+
"Does anyone warm your bed, Ayah?" He asks.
+
She looks up from the crystal display, gaze flitting between the two of us. I expect her to respond irritably, but to my surprise, a smile warms her delicate features.
+
"I'm actually looking for a husband."
+
I gape at her. She speaking in a low, sultry tone, like she's seducing someone.
+
"No she's not," I snap, narrowing my eyes on her. "No, you're not."
+
Jacob stares at her, immediately infatuated. "Can I volunteer?"
