Taken For The Alpha ✔️

Werewolf

*18+ read at your discretion!* My hands tremble by my sides. "Don't sleep with her..." He steps toward me, his eyes dark. "Why not?" "Whatever you were planning to do to her tonight, do it to me instead," I whisper.

Ayah has always been unremarkable in every way other than in the power she wields. Since she was little she has been able to heal even the most fatal of wounds. Because of this, her father has locked her away, keeping her powers safe from the outside world. That is, until a man appears below her balcony, giving her a glimpse into the freedom she could finally have. However, the moment she starts to trust him, he takes her captive, revealing his identity to be a powerful Alpha who needs her to heal his younger sister. But when the girl's illness becomes impossible for Ayah to heal, she is dragged on a journey beside the Alpha to find an amplifier. On the way, she learns their connection goes deeper than their heated attraction, to a soul bond neither can deny.

~Ayah

We leave in the early hours of the morning.

The journey down the mountain takes most of the day. By the time we travel into town, it's late afternoon, the sun drifting lazily toward the horizon.

My forehead has been pressed against the window the entire journey. We traveled through thick snow down the valley until the road started to flatten out and the snow gave way to rocky plains and frost.

I've been taking in everything. Every rock and sprout of grass is new and exciting, so different to what I saw from my window at home.

The village sits beyond the mountain ranges. One of the most impressive mountains, I've learnt is actually a dormant volcano, rearing up behind the small village which lives in a volcanic desert.

The expansive beauty that surrounds the place enthrals me, even if there is nothing but gravelly rock, stout houses and miles of tussocky grass.

As we closed in, Zaon mentioned something about the town's history and how the minerals mined here are part of why his pack is so wealthy and successful.

We pull to a stop down the main straight. Zaon immediately ushers me out onto the paved road, lugging both our bags over his shoulders.

"Where are we going?" I ask, struggling to keep up with his lengthy strides as he purposefully stalks down the road.

"We'll place our bags in each of our rooms in the inn before we see about this rock," he explains. "First, I would like to visit an apothecary up the street."

I frown. An apothecary is for accessing medicine when you're sick. Anyone around me has never needed to access one since my magic is far more effective.

"Apothecary? What could you need from there?" I question, eyeing him sideways.

"An old friend owns it. I would like to see him." He adjusts the strap of my bag on his shoulder.

"Alright..."

At one point, he takes a hold of my forearm to drag me along down the street, complaining about how I'm too busy admiring the beautiful simplicity of the town instead of worrying about keeping up with him.

Unfortunately, he cannot control my eyes, which soon grab hold of the cluster of people building in groups near shop fronts and along the roadside.

They are all staring. Staring at Zaon.

He nods politely at a few, offering his thanks when they compliment him. I almost roll my eyes, especially when they boast about how good and generous of an Alpha he is.

It makes me want to scream, to yell and tell them I'm his captive.

Instead, I keep my lips pressed tightly together. If they admire Zaon, they probably would celebrate my captivity, especially if it means bringing Iris back to life.

I keep close to Zaon as we weave through an especially large group of people. A few girls peel off, blushing and squealing as they point at Zaon. I gaze at their flushed faces that bow together as they whisper in each other's ears.

I look up at the side of Zaon's face, his gaze trained ahead. He's either oblivious or wilfully ignoring the attention.

"They are all fawning over you," I tell him, hoping my mention of it doesn't fan his ego.

"I'm their Alpha."

"Those eyes aren't admiration. They're lust," I state knowingly.

I may be woefully inexperienced and unsocialised, but I recognize lust when I see it. I've seen it in my own eyes, unfortunately caused by Zaon.

While I can't stand him, I can quietly admire his tall, broad form and otherworldly beauty. Being attracted to him doesn't require any additional feelings...

He looks down at me, his lips lifting in a dark smirk. "Can you blame them?"

I roll my eyes. "Oh please. Looks don't compensate for a rotten personality."

"So you are saying I'm good looking?"

I brush my hair over my shoulder. "It's not the compliment you think it is."

He laughs softly, the sound making my head spin. I manage to keep my composure the rest of the way to the apothecary.

The inside smells like dried herbs and something metallic. I take in the wooden shelves and the many glass bottles and coloured tins lining them. In the middle of the room is a table covered in other medical equipment, my gaze passing over it curiously.

All of this is entirely foreign to me, and exists to imitate what my magic can do far better. It makes me wish I could bottle and sell my magic so all of this could be unnecessary.

An older gentleman stands behind a long counter, puzzling over a newspaper. He looks up as the little bell above the door jingles, a smile appearing amidst the darkness of his beard.

"Alpha. I didn't know you were coming," he exclaims, straightening.

"It's good to see you too, Ian," Zaon greets.

My brows quirk. He knows this man. Does he deign to visit this humble village often enough to remember its inhabitants?

"You're a welcome sight," Ian states warmly. "What brings you to the village?"

I mull around, noting the dust gathered on many of the bottles. They are each lightly coloured and hazy, containing cloudy liquid of ambiguous capabilities.

"I've come to see about an amplifier for magic," Zaon explains. "This is Ayah, the girl I've been seeking."

I turn, offering a pleasant smile. I can feel the weight of people's interest when they look upon me, curious about the nature of my power. Their expectations are the heaviest...

"Would you look at that, you finally found her," the old man marvels. "So Iris-"

Zaon bows his head. "Not yet. Hence the amplifier."

"Well, it's lovely to meet you Ayah." Ian flashes me a smile, revealing a mouth full of crooked teeth. "I envy you. All I can do is send terminally ill people off with some herbs that won't even touch their sickness. You can truly heal."

"My magic has brought me nothing but torment, but I'm glad it can do well for others...sometimes." I look at Zyre sideways.

Shockingly, Ian doesn't look surprised that I said that. "It takes a strong person to act only selflessly. You should commend your efforts."

I offer a genuine smile back. Using my magic doesn't always feel like a selfless act. Most of my life I haven't been able to choose to use it.

Zyre clears his throat, bringing attention back to why he's here.

"So ah...I need..."

"I know, I always have them on hand for you." Ian digs under the counter, sorting through a basket of bags I can't see before he pulls one upward.

It's full of a mix of herbs with a few dull purple buds. Zyre takes it promptly, shoving them into his pocket.

"What is that?" I question.

"Nothing," he responds curtly, placing a dense bag of money on the counter for Ian.

Ian opens the bag mindlessly. "They are herbs for pain management."

"Ian," Zaon scolds.

The man looks up, wincing. "Oh, sorry."

I frown, studying Zaon. Someone is only ever in physical pain unless they are ill, injured, or wounded. I haven't noticed him favouring any limb. I haven't even noticed a single grimace.

"Pain? Why are you in pain?"

He doesn't meet my gaze. "It's nothing."

"Whatever it is, I can heal you." I step closer to him, seeing this as an opportunity to garner his trust and favour by healing what ails him.

"No-"

Any protest dies on Zaon's lips as a woman walks out from the back room and to behind the counter beside Ian.

She pauses in her step once she sees Zaon, and for a long moment they just stare at each other. She almost drops the crate full of empty jars from her hands and onto the floor.

She beautiful. Her hair is dark and long, curving over her shoulders. Her eyes are large and round, being a few shades darker than Zaon's vibrant blue.

"Zaon..." she whispers.

Ian plucks the crate from her hands, setting it down.

"Hello Azalea," Zaon greets, his voice tight.

I look between the two, trying to decipher the nature of their relationship. She looks surprised to see him, but pleasantly so, something simmering in the depths of her eyes. Zaon doesn't look so shocked, but there is a lot he doesn't know how to say.

There's a history between them. I feel as though I've walked in on an intimate moment.

"You're here," she breathes. "For how long?"

"Perhaps only tonight," Zaon responds.

Azalea adjusts the strap of her dress, her eyes wide and unblinking. Once she's adjusted her dress to her liking, she moves on to pawing at her hair, trying to move it into a desirable position.

Well fuck. She's attracted to him.

"That's my cue to leave." Ian scratches the back of his neck uncomfortably, giving me one last glance before he disappears out back.

"Staying at the inn?" Azalea asks, her eyes perusing down the front of him. A spark of desire erupts into her eyes, her teeth biting down on her lower lip.

Zaon dips his head. "As usual."

My mouth it dry. What am I witnessing?

"Shall I see you?" She asks tentatively.

"If you wish." Zaon clears his throat. He's clearly uncomfortable, and very aware that I'm staring at him like he's grown another head. Yet it's not enough to stop him from arranging a meet-up with this beautiful female.

Azalea shifts her gaze over to me, beaming brightly.

"Hi, can I help you with anything?" She asks lightly.

"Ah..." I look to Zaon. She doesn't think him and I are here together, which only feeds my mortification.

"Oh, this is Ayah," Zaon jumps in to amend. "She's attending this trip with me."

Azalea's smile drops and she assesses me in a new light. I let her, wondering if I'm even close to a threat to her. I don't want to come off as one, I just happen to be here within Zaon's proximity.

Her eyes dart back to Zaon. "Oh?"

"It's nothing worth mentioning," he exclaims dismissively. "Do not concern yourself."

Ouch.

He has no problem explaining my presence to Ian, yet he's reluctant to go further than introducing me to Azalea.

She seems to relax. "I'll see you tonight, then?"

"Indeed." Zaon nods once, effectively ending their conversation.

Numbly, I follow him to the door, wondering what tonight entails for the both of them, and what that means for me.
