I woke from my nap with a faint rumble in my stomach, craving something comforting and delicious.
+
I smiled, thinking of how Alessandro would always react to my sudden cravings, sometimes I woke him up in the middle of the night because I wanted fried chicken.
+
I pulled myself out of bed, I slipped on a robe, tied it loosely around me, and went to look for him.
+
Even though we didn't share a bedroom, I had grown used to the quiet comfort of his presence nearby, and, today, I wanted to ask him if we could order something special for dinner.
+
The hallways of his mansion were vast, echoing softly with the sound of my footsteps.
+
I passed by several closed doors until I finally stopped when I heard a light tapping sound, almost rhythmic.
+
It was coming from a room at the end of the hall, a room I hadn't been in before.
+
I walked toward the doorway, pausing to peer inside, and that's when I saw him.
+
Alessandro was sitting on the floor, his back to the door, carefully assembling what looked like a crib.
16
I took a step into the room without making a sound, taking in the scene.
+
The room was bathed in soft, golden light, the walls painted a gentle ivory, with touches of pale green and blue here and there.
+
I noticed a small, elegant chandelier hanging above and a cozy rocking chair in one corner.
+
The whole space felt warm, welcoming, and, somehow, very much ours.
+
I must have let out a tiny gasp because Alessandro suddenly spun around, his eyes wide with surprise.
+
"Liliana," he said, his voice filled with warmth and a touch of embarrassment. "You scared me- I didn't hear you come in."
+
"I didn't mean to sneak up on you," I said softly, looking around the room in wonder. "What... what is all of this?"
+
He scratched the back of his head, clearly caught off guard.
+
"Well, this was supposed to be a surprise..." he confessed with a small, unsure smile. "I wanted to create a special space for our babies, a place where they'd feel safe and loved."
2
My heart swelled as I looked around again, trying to absorb the sheer love and care poured into every detail.
+
There was a mobile with tiny stars and moons ready to be hung over the crib.
+
A stack of children's books rested on a low shelf, and the scent of fresh paint and lavender filled the room.
+
Every part of it felt intentional, tender, and filled with love.
+
"You... you did all of this by yourself?" I asked, my voice barely more than a whisper, feeling a lump form in my throat.
+
Alessandro nodded, his expression soft as he looked at me.
+
"I had some help with the decor," he admitted, gesturing to the cozy armchair and soft linens. "But most of it, I wanted to do myself. I wanted it to feel like... home."
+
His words nearly brought me to tears.
+
I felt a sudden urge to reach out and hug him, to show him just how much this meant to me.
+
"Alessandro, it's... it's beautiful," I murmured, looking around with fresh eyes, seeing the love that had gone into every single piece.
+
He rose to his feet and closed the distance between us, his hand reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.

"I wanted it to be a place where you'd feel safe, too," he said, his voice gentle. "You and them."
+
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
+
He held my gaze, and I could see the hope in his eyes, the vulnerability he tried so often to hide.
+
It was as if he was silently asking for my trust, offering me a glimpse of the future he envisioned, a future where we could build a life together.
+
And in that quiet moment, I let down the walls I'd been so carefully holding up, feeling myself soften to him in a way I hadn't allowed myself to before.
+
Suddenly, the moment was interrupted by a voice in the hallway.
+
"Alessandro!" Chiara's voice rang out, and she stopped in front of us, her gaze flicking over to me for a moment before turning back to him.
7
I could feel the tension build in the room at once.
+
Chiara was known for her dramatic entrances, but today it seemed like she had more than just a few harsh words to say.
+
Alessandro expression hardening at the sight of his ex-wife.
+
"Chiara, I don't think we need to have this conversation again," he said coolly, his tone firm but controlled.
+
"Oh, we do," she snapped, glaring at me now, as if I had done something unforgivable by simply existing.
+
"I don't understand how you could do this, how you could be with her. Liliana, your son's ex-wife," she spat, her voice laced with bitterness. "Do you have no shame?"
7
I straightened, my pulse quickening.
2
Chiara had always been jealous, but it was never this intense.
+
I could feel my own defensiveness rise, but I stayed quiet, unsure of how to respond to her sudden intrusion.
+
"You're marrying her because you've lost your mind! You're getting involved with a woman who is already mixed up in our family's mess. What's wrong with you?" Chiara continued, her tone biting.
+
I could see Alessandro's jaw clench, and for a moment, it seemed like he was trying to keep himself composed.
+
But Chiara wasn't done because her eyes drifted around the room.
+
She froze, her expression turning to one of shock and jealousy.
+
"You built her a nursery?!" she almost hissed, stepping further into the room.
+
"Are you out of your mind, Alessandro? You're treating her like she's your wife when we have children together!" Her voice was rising, becoming more and more frantic.
9
I could tell she was spiraling, the jealousy and resentment from years of their failed marriage bubbling to the surface.
+
Alessandro's patience snapped. Without missing a beat, he turned toward her, his voice cold and commanding. "Chiara, that's enough!"
+
I'd never seen him so forceful with her.
1
It was like a switch had flipped, and all the calm that had usually characterized him was gone.
+
He stepped toward her, his eyes hard with a fire I hadn't seen in a long time.
+
"I'm ordering you to leave. Now. You are not welcome here. And you will not step foot in this house again without my permission." His voice was final, laced with authority.
+
Chiara's face reddened with fury, her lips trembling. She opened her mouth to retort, but Alessandro wasn't finished.
+
"I built this nursery for her," he said, his gaze never leaving hers. "And those children in her belly are mine. You will respect that. And you will never come into my home and disrespect her again. Is that clear?"
+
His words hung heavy in the air. For a moment, Chiara just stared at him, as if processing his words.
+
"You'll regret this," she muttered, her voice low and dangerous. "Both of you will."
1
Alessandro didn't flinch. He stood his ground, unwavering.
1
"I'm not interested in what you think, Chiara. Leave. Now," he repeated, his tone brokering no argument.
1
It was clear that the conversation was over.
+
Chiara's eyes flicked to me again, her gaze full of hatred, before she turned on her heel and stormed out of the room.
+
I heard the sharp sound of the front door slamming behind her, and then the silence that followed was almost deafening.
+
I sat there, frozen in place, trying to process everything that had just happened.
+
Alessandro, standing tall, his back to me, took a deep breath.
+
He ran a hand through his hair before turning back to me, his face softening as he walked over.
+
"I'm sorry you had to deal with that," he said quietly, his voice no longer filled with anger but with concern for me.
+
I shook my head, my own emotions still swirling from the confrontation.
+
"It's not your fault," I said, my voice shaky. "She's just angry, and I get it. But... it still hurts."
3
Alessandro crouched down in front of me, taking my hands in his. His touch was gentle, tender, as if trying to ground me after the storm that had just passed.
+
"You don't have to worry about her. You're my priority now," he said softly. "I'm not letting anyone come between us. Not now, not ever."
4
I felt a warmth spread through me at his words, a sense of comfort that I hadn't realized I needed.
+
There was so much unresolved between us, so much uncertainty. But I knew one thing for sure, he was here, by my side, and he was ready to face whatever came our way.
+
"You've already done so much for me," I whispered, feeling my emotions swell inside me. "I don't know how to thank you."
7
"You don't have to," he said, his voice steady and sure. "Just trust me. I'll protect you. I'll protect our family."
