L I L I A N A
+
I glanced at myself in the mirror, smoothing down the deep blue dress that clung to my curves and stretched out over my baby belly.
+
I didn't know what Alessandro had in mind when he invited me to dinner, but I wanted to feel like myself tonight, a version of myself I hadn't felt in a long time.
+
I took one last look in the mirror before I stepped out of my room, and I walked into the dining room.
+
He'd gone through a lot of trouble to set everything up, arranging the table with white linen and shiny plates, a delicate vase of fresh flowers sitting in the center.
7
But I could feel Alessandro's eyes on me immediately.
+
His gaze sweeping over me in a way that sent warmth flooding up my cheeks.
+
I hadn't seen that lustful look in his eyes in what felt like ages.
11
I wasn't sure if he was taken aback by the way the dress fit me, or the fact that I had agreed to dinner with him in the first place, but the moment our eyes met, there was something in his gaze that made my pulse quicken.
+
His lips parted slightly, and for a second, I thought he might say something, but he simply gestured for me to sit down.
+
"You look..." he paused, clearing his throat, as if trying to gather his composure. "You look beautiful."
3
The way he said it, it was like I was the only thing he could see, the only thing he wanted.
+
I sat down, offering him a small smile as I took in the candle-lit table, complete with my favorite dish, garlic pasta with shrimp and a bottle of ice tea.
1
"You went to all this trouble?" I asked, a bit surprised.
19
Alessandro, for all his wealth and power, wasn't usually one for romantic gestures.
+
He shrugged, a faint smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth.
+
"I remember things. I remember you mentioning that you loved garlic pasta with shrimp during my daughter's birthday party." His eyes never left mine as he sat across from me.
5
"You deserve to feel special, Liliana. Especially now."
1
For a few moments, we ate in a comfortable silence.
+
But as the dinner wore on, I couldn't hold back the questions that had been stuck in my mind.
+
Alessandro had opened a door when he brought me here, but there was so much about him that remained a mystery, things I'd been too afraid or too cautious to ask before.
+
"Alessandro," I began, twirling a forkful of pasta, "can I ask you something... bold?"
+
He arched an eyebrow, setting his glass down and watching me intently. "You can ask me anything."
+
"Your ex-wife," I said slowly, "Chiara Moretti. Why did the two of you really divorce? The media adored you both, you were the perfect couple in their eyes."
+
His gaze flickered slightly, but he didn't look away.
+
Instead, he sighed and leaned back in his chair, fingers tracing the edge of his glass.
+
"Chiara and I were an image," he said, his voice steady but tinged with something deeper.
+
"We were never in love. Our families arranged the marriage when we were both young, thinking it would strengthen the alliance between the Moretti's and the Russo's. To the public, we looked like the ideal couple because that was what they wanted to see. But behind closed doors..."
1
He paused, glancing out toward the waves for a moment, before his eyes returned to mine. "Behind closed doors, we were just two strangers. I never loved her, and she knew it. We were both trapped, playing roles that neither of us had chosen. Eventually, the marriage became too hollow to sustain, and we agreed to part ways."
1
I took in his words, thinking of the life he must have lived in the spotlight, in a marriage built on an image rather than true affection.
+
I leaned forward slightly, intrigued. This was the first time I had heard him speak so frankly, "So, you never loved her?"
+
He shook his head. "No. I never did. She was a beautiful woman, a good woman, but our lives were controlled by something bigger than us. The marriage was a means to an end. I don't think she ever understood that, not completely. And as the years went by, it became clear that neither of us could keep pretending."
1
"And Chiara?" I asked. "Does she still love you?"
+
His jaw clenched, and his eyes darkened for a moment, almost as if the question hit him in a place he wasn't ready to confront.
+
"Yes," he admitted, his voice tight. "She still does. But I don't care."
5
His words hung in the air like a confession, and I could feel a knot forming in my stomach.
+
"Why?" I asked, my voice soft.
+
Alessandro's gaze softened for a brief moment, as though he was considering the weight of my question.
+
"Because she's not who I want," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I never wanted her the way she wanted me."
+
I held his gaze, trying to read the emotions behind his words, but he didn't seem to hold any affection for Chiara.
+
"Liliana," he whispered, his voice almost a plea. "I've never loved anyone the way I love you. Not Chiara, not anyone. You are everything I never knew I needed."
35
He wasn't just saying these things to win me over; he was speaking the truth.
8
I could see it in his eyes, in the way his hand reached across the table and covered mine.
+
"You're mine now," he said, his voice low, almost possessive. "And I won't let anyone take you from me."
6
I knew one thing for sure: I was caught in his world, and there was no way out.
